According to this article, fashion brands are trying to use less plastic or eliminate it altogether. This is due to a variety of reasons, one of which is concerns from young consumers (who we applaud). Plastic accounts for 63% of the materials used to make clothes and 73% of those materials end up being incinerated or put in a landfill each year. Plastic goes into polyester and polyvinyl chloride, both of which are used to make clothes. Plastic also goes into hangers, packaging and bubble wrap. Staying with natural fibers cuts down on plastic but it doesn't come for free. Dialing back on plastic can push up costs due to the fact that those fabrics tend to be more expensive. But there is no reason to give up on fashion! According to this article, one way to keep up your fashionable wardrobe and help the environment is to shop resale stores which reduces textile waste, is eco-friendly, and creates a recycling community. And with the whole KonMari craze, there are more resale products for sale than ever before!
